Groundhog Day: Superstition or Rodent Meteorologist?

Mason Mercer, Staff Writer

Groundhog Day, what do people think? Is it real or is it just something fun and look forward to? Groundhog Day has been a holiday since February second of 1886. Groundhog Day is a day represented in the hope of winter ending if the groundhog comes out of his burrow and sees his shadow and runs back in the winter will continue for six more weeks, but if he does not see it and stays out then spring will come.

A lot of people believe in the holiday because, as children, it was seen as a fun way to predict the future. The holiday represents a sort of belief that things can change. Here at JM, most of the students believe in Groundhog Day because they were raised believing in it. It can be fun and exciting and can help cheer people up for the nicer weather ahead.

The holiday can lead back to religious and spiritual backgrounds as well and it is said that the date animals wake from hibernation or their sleep will determine how much longer it will be until the spring or a seasonal change.
