NHS stands for National Honors Society. Mrs. Reyes is in charge of the NHS organization and organized the ceremony. National Honors Society is an organization for high school students that show outstanding academic achievements and a well-rounded character. In order to be eligible for National Honors Society you have to have a cumulative 3.5 GPA and be active in the school and community. Then, qualifying students submit an application then once in which an anonymous faculty council decides membership. Members are determined based upon leadership, service, character. Depending on the size of the Junior class are how many students can be chosen. There are no limits for the senior class members chosen, but the application process determines what seniors will be accepted into the organization.
The National Honors Society ceremony was held March 4, 2026 in Jackson Milton High School’s cafetorium. Students can be chosen for the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Students are voted for by their fellow peers for these positions.
All of the officers and current members of the 2025 National Honors Society selection are: President Jack McDevitt, Vice President Peyton Ford, Secretary Abigail Bueno, Treasurer Katie Byers, Nathaniel Craver, Lila Herman, Caleb Knipp, Brena McBeth, Joy Mohr, Charlize Saunders, and Tiffany Tingler.
The new 2026 National Honors Society members include: Ciera Pyle, Lorelei Bayer, Lexie Figinsky, Addison Glista-Hemker, Emma Johns, Olivia Newhard, David Osborne, Gabriella Price, Rachel Reese, Ethan Sokol, Nora Schwarten, Miah Tomaino, Walker Wolf, and Amani Yasin. The 2026 ceremony started off with Mrs. Reyes greeting everyone’s families and talking about what the National Honor Society is. The ceremony then progressed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Along with President Jack McDevitt introducing the officers and senior members. Principal of Jackson Milton High School, Mr. Vega, was in attendance at the ceremony and gave congratulatory remarks.
Following, a guest speaker Katelin Whitney Demes who was a 2011 NHS alumni and was there in attendance following the ceremony to speak. These NHS members were a big part of the ceremony by speaking about the following: Scholarship Peyton Ford, Service Abigail Bueno, Leadership Katie Byers, and Character Nate Craver. Jack McDevitt then concludes to do the “New Member Pledge”. Then coming to a closing Mrs. Reyes and the officers help install the new officers for the 2026 NHS organization. Lastly certificates were given out by Brena McBeth and Lila Herman. Joy Mohr ended the ceremony with some closing remarks.
Abigail Bueno stated, “NHS is where service leads, character guides, and scholarship opens a multitude of doors.”
Ethan Sokol said, “NHS is such an amazing opportunity and honor to be in.”
Mrs. Reyes stated, “It is great working with the NHS members throughout the year and seeing how much compassion and dedication they have to helping others. NHS opens up the member’s minds because they get to meet and interact with people they probably would not have done so on their own. Going to the Antonine Village lets them see firsthand how much the elderly enjoy the youth and appreciate their time to visit.”
