The Stress of Tests

Adam Smith, Staff Writer

At Jackson-Milton, tests are a part of every student’s life. As JM has been voted ‘Excellent with Distinction’, it has been a goal to keep this in the picture and continue to represent this award. After reviewing student’s studying techniques, there is a large amount of diversity in how students handle studying.

Some study every night, some claim they do not study at all. Senior student Chance Proverbs was asked how often he studies per month, and his response was, “Never.  I have full trust in myself to come in on test day and pass. It’s how I work and it works for me.” Although Chance is unlike a lot of other students who partake in studying weekly, he does earn good grades and is proud of his report card.

Some tests that are taken throughout a student’s high school career include the OGT’s, or Ohio Graduation Tests. These tests are taken sophomore year by all students in order to proceed to a bigger grade level. There is a test for almost all subjects; if students fail the first time they take a test they are allowed to take another one until they pass. Another new test that students had to start preparing for is the PARCC test. The graduating class of 2016 is a lucky class, as they did not have to take this PARCC test which is a similar test to the OGT’s. Classes below 2016 began moving to this test, and a version of online testing where students take the same exact test over the internet for an international grade.

Tyler Phillips was asked what test subjects he has the hardest time preparing for, and he says “The ACT is the most stressful thing I’ve had to prepare for.” The ACT is the talk of the senior class as they continue to compete for who can get the highest. The test is hard to study for as it involves 4 different sections.

Tests are always going to be a part of student’s lives, so they should get used to it while they can.
