JM Wrestling team is pinning their way through the season

The Jackson-Milton wrestling team is a young team this year. Returning only five wrestlers from last season, the team consists of only four upper classmen. This includes the three seniors, state qualifier Terry Stockton, state alternate Anthony Italiano and district qualifier Joseph Burnside, and one junior, Nick Vergalitto.

To kick off the season, the Blue Jays participated in the Austintown Scrimmage on November 21 at Austintown High School. The following weekend the Jays participated in the Turkey-Burper Scrimmage at Canfield High School.

To begin their competitive season, the Blue Jays sent seven wrestles to participate at the 31st Annual Solon Comet Classic. One Jay, senior Anthony Italiano found success in the tournament and accumulated a 3-2 record on his route to take 4th place. Jeremy Seka, 106, went 1-2, Anthony Pizzuto, 113, went 0-2, Dylan Kemble, 138, went 1-2, Nick Vergalitto, 145, went 2-2, Joseph Burnside, 152, went 1-2, and Nick Scarl, 160, went 1-2.

On December 11, the Blue Jay wrestlers battled the Jefferson Falcons and the Brookfield Warriors at Ashtabula Edgewood. In the first dual meet, the Jays took down the Warriors 28-21. Jeremy Seka, Anthony Pizzuto and Dylan Kemble each won by forfeit, putting the Jays at an 18-6 advantage early in the meet. Senior Anthony Italiano defeated Bryce Randall 15-4, which gathered four more points for the Jays and sophomore Nick Scarl with the big win against Tyler Lucas, pinned his opponent in 2:58. Unfortunately, the Jays fell short against the Jefferson Falcons. The final score of the dual meet was 13-54. Gathering wins for the Blue Jays were Jeremy Seka with a win by forfeit, Joe Burnside with a 11-2 major decision, and Anthony Italiano with a 9-4 decision.

On December 18 and 19, the Blue Jays traveled to Waterloo to take on the Division 3 Wrestling Classic. Here, the Jays wrestled teams they would see frequently throughout the season. Placing for the Jays was Jeremy Seka at 106 took 4th, Terry Stockton at 120 took 4th, Nick Scarl at 152 took 6th, and the Jays highest placer, Anthony Pizzuto took 3rd at 113.

On January 2nd, the Blue Jays hosted their annual home tournament, the Leonard Truck & Trailer Invitational. The Jays finished in 5th place, just behind ITCL rivals, the Crestview Rebels. Placing for the Jays was Anthony Pizzuto, 4th at 113, Nick Scarl, 4th at 152, Anthony Italiano, 4th at 182, Jeremy Seka, 3rd at 106, and Terry Stockton, 3rd at 120. The tournament gave a definite feel on what the Jays need to improve on in order to find success in the post-season.

On January 6th, the Blue Jays traveled to Girard to take the Indians head-on. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays fell short of their goal on defeating the Indians. Finding success in the dual meet was Jeremy Seka, who won by forfeit, Anthony Pizzuto, who won by decision, Terry Stockton, who won by technical fall, and Anthony Italiano, who won by decision. The final team score was 60-17.

The Blue Jays traveled to Liberty on January 13th to take on the Leopards. Although the Jays fell short to the Leopards, quite a few wrestlers found success on the mat. Gathering wins for the Blue Jays were Jeremy Seka, 106, with a 8-3 decision, Anthony Pizzuto, 113, with a 10-0 major decision, Terry Stockton, 126, with a first period pin, Dylan Kemble, 138, with a first period pin, Nick Vergallito, 152, with a 13-2 major decision, Nick Scarl, 160, with a first period pin, and Anthony Italiano, 182, with a win by forfeit. The final score of the dual was 35-42.

On January 16th, the Jays battled against Berkshire and Canton McKinley for their senior day. This was the last time the two seniors, Terry Stockton and Anthony Italiano would ever wrestle in their home gym. Dual wise, the Blue Jays went 1-1, falling to Canton McKinley 15-55 and beating Berkshire, 48-24. Winning both of their matches for the Jays was Terry Stockton, 126, who had two pins and Nick Scarl, 160, who had a pin and a decision. Other wrestlers who won included Rayce Edwards, 132, with a pin against Canton McKinley, Nick Vergallito, 145, with a pin against Berkshire, and Anthony Italiano, 182, with a forfeit against Berkshire.

 

On January 30th, the Blue Jays travelled to Columbiana High School for the Inter-Tri Country League tournament. The Jays finished second in the league, just behind the Crestview Rebels. Going undefeated throughout the tournament was senior Anthony Italiano, who finished 1st. Finishing in 2nd place for the Jays was Anthony Pizzuto, 113, Terry Stockton, 126, and Nick Scarl, 160. The wrestlers who took 3rd place were Jeremy Seka, 106, Dylan Kemble, 132, and Nick Vergallito, 145. The Blue Jays will have their next league tournament, the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament, on February 5th and 6th at Howland High School.

On February 5th, the Blue Jays began their final in-season tournament, the Eastern Ohio Wrestling Tournament at Howland High School. As a team, the Blue Jays tied for 13th place with 46.0 points. The lone seniors, Terry Stockton and Anthony Italiano, were the only two wrestlers to place, both of which took 5th place. From here, the Blue Jays enter the post season and will wrestle at Rootstown High School in the Sectional Tournament.

On February 20th, the Blue Jays entered the post season and travelled to Rootstown High School to take the post season head on. The Jays finished in 8th place as a team with 73.5 points. Advancing to the District Tournament for the Blue Jays are Anthony Pizzuto, 113, who took 3rd, Terry Stockton, 120, who took 3rd, Nick Scarl, 152, who took 3rd, and Anthony Italiano, 195, who took 4th. Also placing for the Blue Jays were Jeremy Seka, 106, who took 5th, and Nick Vergallito, 145, who took 5th, and were both alternates. Next, the Blue Jays will wrestle at the District Tournament where the top four in each weight class will move on to the State Tournament.

Wrestler Terry Stockton finished 4th at Districts and will compete at the State Tournament.
