The Jr/Sr trade program is a program that helps students with getting knowledge on carpenters trade to an apprentice level. They do projects that are helping them with exploring tools and the equipment and also skills that are in real life applications.
Mr. Weidenthal says, “I wanted to start doing this because carpenter’s work is both a hobby and passion of mine.” This is showing that he is trying to show other students one of his hobbies to see if they would like it. Though it is not a full carpenter union, he has been a part of a Laborers Union that is located out of the Local 953. He has done this as long as he has been a teacher, 13 years.
This program is also helping students with a different career path for after their high school life. This program is a hands-on class and can help students to be more successful entering the work force.
There are currently 4 juniors and 6 seniors that are in this program. This program was already going on in the school for 3 years and just now started to gain more people with the leadership of Mr. Weidenthal. Mr Weidnthal also says, “The goal is to give students skills for life.”
Even if the students aren’t going to pursue this as a career, these skills can still help them in their future. Some of the projects that they are working on include: Adirondack Chairs, birdhouses, wooden flags, shop tables, or anything to do with needed projects with school.
They are also currently running a fundraiser for Christmas trees that include lights and ornaments and the product is excellent!
