The Jackson-Milton girls Varsity team this year has been great. Last year they had three girls, and now they are up to ten girls. This season has been amazing considering there is one senior, three sophomores, and seven freshmen. Head Coach Jeff Wilson and assistant Coach Madison Cauffield have put in so much time and dedication to these girls. This team is really going to continue to build a better team as they had seven freshmen come out and three sophomores. There is time and room to grow with all the girls that are here and that will be playing next year. They should all be very proud for the way they have played this past season. They had great record of 10-13 for the season.
On February 1, 2024, the Jackson-Milton Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Heartland Christian High School in Columbiana. The girls played very well against Heartland but got off to a slower start than normal. After knocking down a few shots, they picked things up and got right back into it. The girls kept Heartland down in the second quarter. They started switching things up so they could shut down Heartland early. The girls ended up in the lead and hit some nice shots at the end of the half. Going into the second half, the girls had to step up to show that they wanted this. Jackson-Milton was up by ten but got a little shut down and couldn’t really shut down Heartland on defense. Heartland ended up making a comeback but Jackson-Milton knocked down some more good shots tying the score. At the end of the fourth quarter, both teams kept each other down and they ended up going into halftime. There were fouling and getting fouled to keep everything down but their foul shots just weren’t falling last night. Heartland ended up making their foul shots and getting ahead by eight. Overall, the girls played very hard and you could tell they really wanted to win but it just wasn’t their night. Amani Yasin was the leading scorer with 18 points. Following with Emma Johns knocking down 16 points and Gabby Kerr with 13.
On February 5, 2024, the Jackson-Milton Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Mineral Ridge High School . The girls got off to a slow start but played very hard the second half. Going into the game, they started in a zone defense which helped them a lot just to get started but as the game started to pick up, they went man and pressed. Their offense was getting better as the game went on and after the first few points, the girls really started to lock in. The girls were getting tired going into the second quarter but after Ridge started slowing down, Jackson-Milton started to pick things up and that’s when they really started knocking down threes and driving to the hoop. Getting back on defense was the hardest for them because Ridge has a lot of good ball handlers and they were very consistent with their passes. Jackson-Milton has great defense when they get back though because they are able to get steals and poke at the ball which leads to a fast break layup. Our girls have a very good team considering they are all freshmen with one senior. They always play with everything they have and always give 100% on the court. Our leading scorer was Emma Johns with 20 points.
On February 14, 2024, the Jackson-Milton Varsity Girls Basketball team had their last conference game against Lowellville at home. The girls came out very strong and knocked down a few three pointers in the first quarter taking them ahead by six points. As the score got closer, the girls really had to step it up and get back on defense. Anyone could tell that they played like it was there last time on the court. They all played with heart. Coming back into the third quarter, Lowellville stepped up their game and started driving to the hoop and getting fouled and knocking down a couple three pointers as well. Jackson-Milton really needed to start getting into their press and executing on their press breaker. There was some tension out on the court between a few players, but they are still part of the team and they really worked like they were. Going into the fourth quarter, Jackson Milton tried not to give up many points but it happened to the best of them. Lowellville got ahead by ten but our girls made a comeback and shut them down and only ended up losing by seven. This game was very good and everyone was very competitive. These girls should be very proud of how far they have come considering the first time they played Lowellville they lost by twenty and this time they only lost by seven.
“I feel like we played with everything we had and left everything out on the court at the end. We could have definitely played better defense going into the third quarter but overall I think we did well considering we managed to close the gap from the first game.” – Freshman Gabby Kerr.
