The drones class for JMHS is a class where you can fly drones, race drones, and get a license to fly a drone once you are done with that class. The class is a whole year class.
The drones class will start racing in the second semester of the school year, the drones practice racing in the main gym and the auxiliary gym.
Mr. Mohr, the teacher of the drones class says that ,“The county educational service center found us grant money to use along with eight other schools. Mr. Baker saw that another school had the drones class and he thought it would be cool to have at JMHS.”
The students love the class and they think that the class is a good addition to Jackson-Milton High School.
Mr. Mohr also says, “Students learn from the USI to take their FAA Part 107 exam in the spring to become licensed Drone pilots that they can legally work on commercially flying drones.”
On Thursday October 12th 2023 the Mahoning County Sheriff’s office came to the school and showed the students in the drones class how they use the drones for hostage situations or to find missing people.
Deputy Hovanec says, “They have it at such a young age, whereas I started it at 35-40. They’re starting it at 17-18,” Deputy Hovanec said that the drones class was a big advantage for the students, the advantage is that the students will be able to get there commercial license to fly a drone at the age of 16.
