“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” For the Jackson-Milton varsity wrestling team, their hard work has proven to beat their competition. Leading the Jays in all three wrestling tournaments has been Senior Owen McDevitt. He is 10-1 so far with many accomplishments in all these tournaments.
Leading the Jays next is Sophomore Jayden Scott. Jayden was crowned a champion at his first tournament, and made many accomplishments so far.
The Jays hosted a tri- tournament and topped Liberty 53-26 but fell to United 38-36. Here are how the Jays placed Jayden Scott 2-0, Jack McDevitt 1-1, Owen McDevitt 1-1, Lucas Sokol 2-0, Colton Lynn 2-0, Gavin White 1-1, Camron Lynn 1-1, Cole Capelli 1-1, Brayden Greathouse 1-1, Brock Piatt 1-1, Caden Allen 1-0, and lastly Trent Joseph 1-0.
The team’s head coach, Brain Weidenthal, states, “We go by a quote on our team this year that sums our mentality up a bit, “the man didn’t fall on top of the mountain.” We reference this quite a bit. We have to put the work in to get to the top, the men on our team are embracing the grind everyday to make that climb.” He continues on, “They continually show up with a good attitude ready to get to work! It’s still early in the season, but the men are on the right track!”
Senior Owen McDevitt stated, “As a team we are young but very disciplined. At the two tournaments we went to we had many placers. We still have a lot of work to do but we will get there. “
Gavin White then added, “It’s been going good recently, with a lot of people placing high throughout the tournaments we’ve been to. We look forward to a few of us making it to the state tournament.” These two seniors have both made great improvement and are looking to advance far this year.
