In April of 2019 the Junior class of Jackson-Milton went on a trip to Hiram college for a Drinking and Distracted Driving presentation. The people’s lives that were affected by drinking and driving bravely stood up and shared their stories about the sad experience. It was eye opening to many people in the audience and many will remember the words said by those affected. Paintings were made to represent the cost of drunk driving or to prevent it. Grace McDevitt’s painting was judged and she placed third in the event.
Grace received 500 dollars for designing such a unique and eye opening painting. Grace was asked what the point that she was trying to get across, she replied, “I was trying to get across that nobody should drink and drive because one you could hurt other people, two hurt other and three not be paying attention to anything besides yourself.”
Grace’s picture shows the interior of a car, displaying some wise words and some of the distractions while driving. Grace was also asked what influenced her to make the painting, she said, “It was just an idea that people are always drinking and driving and I was just trying to get a message out there.”
Her painting will always be remembered by the students and staff at Jackson-Milton for how unique and inspiring it is.
