Canned Food Drive: Woman with a Bright Future

Korie Gross is a senior at Jackson Milton High School. She is an honor roll student who often volunteers her time. In February she partnered with the YWCA to collect canned food for the less fortunate.

Every teacher received a cardboard box which then students would fill with non perishable items, such as canned food. “I collected food for my women with a bright future scholarship.”  Gross stated that she asked teachers willing to participate in the fundraiser if they would give “Extra Credit” points to students who did their share of donating.

“As many may know, earning a scholarship is not an easy task. However, I got to support a cause I care about, while earning a scholarship is a win-win that just really makes me happy.”

Gross stated that she loves to volunteer, even at small events. The drive lasted about two weeks and shortly after the fact the items were to be counted. In the end Gross ended up raising more than 500 non perishable food items, and cans. Gross stated that she is very proud of herself and the school with what they have been able to accomplish. After all of her hard work and with the help of the school, Korie was able to get herself the “Women with a bright future scholarship.”  Gross plans to attend Lake Erie college to pursue a career in teaching Special education.
