May 8, 2017
When you think of an unusual sport what do you think of? Would you think of rugby, cricket, maybe handball? What about ice skating? Tiffany Voland, a senior at Jackson – Milton High School, has been ice skating for over 11 years. She sees it as a great way to express herself, be happy, and loves the beauty of the sport.
Tiffany partakes in many tournaments throughout the country. Over the past school year, she skated in a large tournament in Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. At the tournament she won 9 first place medals, 5 second place medals, 2 thirds, 1 fourth, and 1 fifth. She participates in many other tournaments such as Worlds in Texas, California, and Winter Classics in Florida. Tiffany is for sure a winner and that is just a bonus as to why she loves skating so much.
When Tiffany was younger she was homeschooled until high school. She and her best friend wanted to find a sport to do because she could not do any school sports, so she found the sport as a way to do something athletic and fun. Her mom was a huge inspiration to her and has helped support her every step of the way. Today she has coaches who have also brought her a long way, including her coaches Julie French and Christie Mitch.
When Tiffany was asked why she loves skating so much and why it makes her happy, she quickly responded with, “ Whenever I step on the ice it’s like another world, a place where I can be myself, happy and free. ”
In the future, Tiffany plans to attend Bowling Green State University, and will skate on their skating team. She also plans to coach people in the future after school and wants to introduce the sport to her family she plans on having one day.
Tiffany partakes in a sport many of us overlook, and finds the greatness in it. She is a fantastic skater and it has helped her throughout many times in her life. She will continue skating and it will continue to take her far in life. Without this sport, Tiffany would not be who she is today.
