Students in "Helping Hands" lend a helping hand

Gabrielle Arquilla, Staff Writer

Helping Hands is a new class offered to Jackson-Milton Seniors. Helping Hands is a class where seniors go down and teach kids on how to speak to others, what to do and what not to do in different situations, how to be a good friend, what to say in conversations that kids our age are having and normal school stuff.

There are three teachers involved in this program, Mrs. Raschilla, Mrs. Carolyn, and Mrs. Kathy. We have 7 Seniors involved in this program and that includes, Gabby Arquilla, Mayve Carpenter, Noah Laster, Tiffany Voland, Heather Kirk, Katie Matasy, and Scott Mitchell. From what Mrs. Yantes hears from everyone, the program is going great. Mrs Raschilla is also enjoying the program and thinks it is doing very well, for her and for the students.

Every student is required to help with individual work, classroom activities, building social skills, and life skills activities. They have to create bonds, they have to be more than helpers and more like friends! Throughout the grading period students are supposed to make a reflective journal entry about their experience throughout this course. Then the full year students have to include an interview report, this will b on a teacher, therapist, or parent. There is a final project that will be a 4-5 page expository essay on a topic or theme related to special education.
These past couple weeks we have been working on the carnation sale and we have been cutting ribbons and cutting the tags out. Also, every Friday this class makes the popcorn that sells for .50 each. This class is not only helping the students in it, but it is also helping the students that go in everyday to help them.
