April 18, 2016
The basic/ most used definition of the word “volunteer” is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. Different organizations that you can join to do different community work or help other people who need a helping hand includes a local Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop. You can also join different church organizations, like Missionary work, hold a local food drive, run a drive for clothing/ household items with your church. You can also help volunteer at the local Mission Rescue, nursing homes, assisted living, and different hospitals.
The different things the Boy and Girl Scouts do to give back includes holding different drives. For example, Girl Scout Troop 397, every year in the month of January they ask people to donate pillows and pillow cases and at the end of the month they go to the local homeless shelter and give out the pillows to the families.
For the Local Boy Scout troop in North Jackson they help out at the Coon dogs by helping park the vehicles coming in and also help with the traffic coming in to the event and cars going out. They also hold a Pancake Breakfast within the Trustees building in Lake Milton.
For churches, the Pricetown Untied Methodist Church holds a local Food Pantry for different canned foods. All of the donations that get collected now get dispersed to different rescue missions around in different counties.
JM Senior, Cheyenne Morrow helped at a Nursing Home in Austintown for National Honor Society. “I really enjoyed seeing the excitement and the happiness on the residents faces when I went, and I also loved being able to help them in any way. I want to be able to volunteer more and help as many people as I can. I helped them play bingo, make crafts, and painting their nails was definitely my favorite and one of my best moments I have ever made,” says Cheyenne Morrow.
At the school, the Key Club helps a lot with the local Rescue Mission in Youngstown, by serving lunches and cleaning up after. SADD also volunteers for various activities throughout the school year. All of the clubs and organizations come together during the holidays to raise funds for the Blue Jay Elf as well, which enables students and families in the community to have a happy holiday. There are many different ways students can do community service work in our area.
